How to Make $10k Per Day with Shopify & TikTok Ads

A short tutorial

Intro

Last week, I shared a story about my first online Shopify Store ever.

In this post, you’ll read I sold my products via collaborations with Instagram influencers.

While you could still do that today, I believe there are now better ways to get your products out there.

Yes, via TikTok Ads

Why TikTok ads?

Well, there are a few reasons:

  1. TikTok is the fastest growing social media platform today
  2. TikTok ads are CHEAP
  3. Influencers have become TOO EXPENSIVE
  4. There is a HUGE customer base
  5. Easy scalable (increase budget when ads are going well, decrease or shut down when an ad is not working).

Sounds simple enough, right?

Although I covered mostly everything in my previous article, let’s go over some basics again, and add some extra information that will be useful, should you be willing to give this business model a try.

Finding a Winning Product

In the other article, we did our research via Instagram — well, here we’re going to do it via TikTok.

The process is simple:

  • If you see the store has sales in the past few days and past few months, you know it’s making money for someone, and we know it will make money for us too.
  • Write your possible products down in a spreadsheet, do research about the products, find a supplier and you’re ready to go.

Website creation

Just as in the previous article, I recommend building your webshop via Shopify.com.

Get started with Shopify for €1 per month

You can follow the steps that I wrote before, but the most important thing is that your PRODUCT PAGE is “sexy as hell”.

This is going to be the page that your customers see, this is going to be the page that sells. 90% of your website visitors won’t even bother to check the other pages of your webshop.

One other important thing:

Make sure to OPTIMIZE FOR MOBILE!

Think about it. Ever used TikTok on your PC? I know I haven’t.

So 99.99% of your visitors will be visiting your website and product page via their mobile device. So make sure it looks amazing.

TIP: You can simply copy/import a product page via a Shopify integration app called “Kopy”:

“But Shipping Takes So Long”

One comment that I hear all the time. I just wanted to tackle this quickly.

It’s true that shipping takes between 10 and 14 days — however if you have good customer support, answer mails quickly, provide tracking info… you won’t (or barely) have any complains.

And what about returns?

Don’t even bother with it. Returning a product is more expensive than the product itself…

You have a few options:

  1. Option 1: Refund the customer fully, and let them keep the product. I mean, your products barely cost you anything, so it’s not big deal. → This is the preferred option.
  2. Option 2: You can also “play it dirty” and say something like: We saw you purchased your item during our pre-summer sale. Normally sale items are non-refundable or exchangeable according to our policy (this must indeed be written in your policy). However, we are willing to make an exception and try find a solution: what we could do, is offer you a partial refund ($12.50), and you get to keep the item.
    → 
    I don’t really like this option, but maybe sometimes you don’t have a choice if you have to cover your costs.
  3. Option 3: Say that the demand is currently very high, and you’re doing your very best to service all your customers with the highest quality. Give them a coupon of like 50% discount for your store, and for sure ALWAYS provide them with tracking info.

Configuring the TikTok Ads

Before we get started, I want to emphasize that I’m just going over the “broad points” of TikTok ads.

If you’re serious about this business, I highly recommend you to follow some real training about it. The person that trained me is Gilberto, should you be interested, you can simply message him on Instagram.

That being said — Go to https://ads.tiktok.com

1. Create a new campaign

Our goal is “Website Conversions”.

We want to optimize for conversions, so we select “Complete Payment”.

For placement, select “TikTok”, and disable all the “advanced settings”.

We don’t want users to comment on the ads, because often this will include haters too, and we’ll be wasting our ads budget on haters then… which doesn’t make sense.

Plus, the algorithm will send your ads to these “haters”, instead of to the people who would actually want to buy your products.

Next, turn on “Automated creative optimization”. More on that below.

For targeting, I recommend choosing USA and/or UK.
You might need an agency account for this.

Don’t target any interest or audience just yet. Instead, we will let TikTok decide.

Budget: $20

Set your schedule to midnight the following day.

That’s all, click Next.

Video ads

TikTok is based on video ads — meaning we need videos.

But where do we get videos? Simple, we’ll download them:

  • Use the tools from above (https://en.minea.com/ and https://www.pipiads.com/), they have free trials.
  • You already used this to see which ads are doing well (and getting sales)
  • Here, you simply look up your product, and download the videos
  • E.g. For Minea, click on “Creatives from product” to see all the videos that they’ve been running as ads. You can simply download these.

I recommend downloading at least 3 videos, preferably more.

EDIT your videos

It’s against policies and copyright to just download and use these videos as your own. So I suggest editing them slightly in a video editing tool, before using them.

I’ll not dive into that now, but there are some free editing tools that you can use, like Canva.com.

Add videos to your ad groups

The reason we’re using “Automated creative optimization”, is because it will allow us to add 5 lines text.

For example:

  • Get 50% off today
  • “OMG my girlfriend LOVES these!”
  • Free shipping today!
  • etc
  • etc

Add your URL, add ONE video to the Ad Group, and SAVE.

Duplicate your ad groups

Add your other videos and edit the time.

Save these new add groups as well. If you downloaded 3 videos, you’ll now have 3 ad groups.

Let it run 24–48 hours

After 24 hours , we will see which ad groups are working and which ones are not.

Lets say you have 3 videos (ad creatives) in 3 ad groups, then you can check the specific results for each of them. Next, you can increase the budget for the “winning” ones, and simply turn off the “losing” ones.

For example, in the screenshot below you can see that the first one generated 3 sales, while the other 2 generated nothing.

You can then turn off the other 2, and put full budget into the first one.

IMPORTANT: Initially, it will COST you money!

We have to be realistic. This ‘testing’ strategy will usually cost you a bit of money in the beginning.

Marketeers and advertisers will probably understand this; working with ads is usually a case of “trial and error”. The smallest of setting can make a huge difference.

In the end, it all comes down to knowing how to work with ads, scaling what works and cutting down what doesn’t work.

Note that this also goes for your products!

If you’re running 5 video ads, and generating 0 sales, then the product is just bad or overly saturated. That’s okay, it happens. Happened to me a few times as well!

However…

However, once your ads have taken off… you’ll see something like this:

And this is our goal. After increasing budget, we ended up at 10k sales in 1 day (which is the screenshot at the top of this article).

But keep your feet on the ground!

Don’t be obsessed by these sales numbers. Remember, that from these sales, you still have to deduct a bunch of things:

  • ads spent
  • product cost
  • shipping cost
  • Shopify cost
  • taxes
  • domain name & mailbox cost
  • VA cost
  • 3rd party research tools cost

Whatever is left… is your profit.

But still…

But still… the sales numbers displayed are those from ONE day.

If you generate numbers than this, your profit margins are easily 30–50%, after deduction of the costs.

Key takeaways

Having a webshop and selling products online allows you to scale your income exponentially, all while working from home (or even outsourcing it).

This is how it works:

  • Do product research via the tools provided above
  • Create a webshop with the correct addons, optimized for mobile conversions
  • Study up on TikTok ads and become an expert in them
  • Scale winning ads, cut losing ads

Some Q&A:

  • Is drop shipping via Shopify & TikTok ads still profitable in 2023? Yes, for sure. Above screenshot are taken today!
  • Is it easy? Relatively. Depends on how much time and effort you’re willing to put into it, same as anything. You can’t expect to become a pro athlete overnight — same goes with business.
